Veronica Hernandez

July 2008

Veronica Hernandez, 17, a young woman of Mexican descent, has volunteered numerous hours in her neighborhood recreation center the last two summers, serving as an assistant in the summer day camp program. During the school year, she returned to the inner-city middle school she attended, where she tutored newly-arrived immigrant students, helping them to learn English, while mentoring them to be successful in school.

During her junior year, Veronica volunteered at the local chapter of Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD), where she provided much needed behind-the-scenes assistance to the staff. She sought donations for special events, helped plan activities, and provided clerical assistance as needed.

Additionally, Veronica is a passionate and active member of her school’s Pan American Student Forum and Project Green, an environmental club. At the end of last school year, Veronica was elected president of her school’s National Honor Society and Project Green. Also, during the past school year, she worked with some of her classmates who were struggling in math, and with her assistance through her peer tutoring efforts, her classmates successfully passed state-mandated math tests.

Veronica’s commitment, dedication, and abundant service distinguish her as a CHCI Young Leader of Today.
