Wendy Cartagena-Gonzalez - May 2014 Scholar of the Month

Wendy Cartagena-Gonzalez
CHCI-Telemundo Scholar

North Hollywood, California
B.A., Communications
University of California—Los Angeles

In today’s technologically advanced society, broadcast journalism is important because it is a news source that is accessible anywhere, keeping people constantly informed. As an aspiring broadcast journalist attending the University of California, Los
Angeles continues to educate me about the career I want to pursue in broadcast journalism. Most importantly, it has given me the opportunity to get hands on experience with my university’s award winning student-run internet radio program. As a news
reporter for UCLA Radio, I provide coherent weekly news reports covering international news, which mirrors my career goals. Covering world news has given me the opportunity to raise awareness about global issues, essentially building a stronger and more mindful UCLA student community.

After graduating UCLA I want to enroll in a hands-on broadcast journalism master’s degree program at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. What interests me the most about the Broadcasting and Journalism graduate
program at Newhouse is the immersive curriculum, were virtually everyday I will have the opportunity to be a working student journalist covering real stories and studying different electronic formats of news informing. By enrolling in a journalism graduate program I will feel confident and well prepared for a career in mainstream media due to
the adequate preparation I will obtain that will complement my UCLA undergraduate education.

Ultimately, my career goal is to work for an international news agency similar to the BBC that focuses on underdeveloped regions of the world and educate individuals about issues that impact our globalized society. As an aspiring Latina broadcast journalist, I hope to become an influential and empowering Latina to motivate more men
and women of color to pursue careers in news media to help decrease our disappointing underrepresentation in media related careers.

As a first-generation college student, the journey to obtaining a college education has been very difficult. I have had to surpass various emotional and economic challenges to get to where I am today. Despite the adversities I have had to overcome living in a single parent household, my greatest achievement to date is having the opportunity to
attend college in order be closer to my career goals. It took a lot of work to get where I am today, which contributes to my achievement of becoming a first-generation college student. My sense of responsibility and commitment to my educational goals is the result of the discipline I obtained from balancing a job, school, extracurriculars, and sports throughout high school. Over the years, I have come to understand that facing adversities teaches us how to become more resilient. Most importantly, facing adversities has given me the strength to challenge myself academically and face the obstacles that come my way as a minority student from a low-socioeconomic background.
