Why We Give

Since 1978 the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) has sought to improve the lives of young, talented Latinos by providing educational and leadership development opportunities through its award-winning scholarship, internship, fellowship, and Ready to Lead college readiness programs.

WHY WE GIVE highlights committed companies and organizations that have provided countless opportunities to young, talented Latinos through their planned giving to the Institute. These supporters also serve as mentors and inspire CHCI's program participants as to what it truly means to be a leader and an agent for change within their communities.

Meet Ivan Zapien, Senior Director Federal Government Relations, and Belinda Garza, Senior Manager Federal Government Relations, of Walmart and hear how they are making a difference in the lives of young Latinos.

Why does Walmart support CHCI?

IVAN: We at Walmart believe strongly in CHCI's mission to develop the next generation of Latino leaders. This year we provided CHCI with its first transformational gift of $1 million, which expanded its Congressional Internship Program year-round and will increase the number of opportunities to young Latinos on Capitol Hill. Our support of CHCI ensures that the fastest growing population in the country is given the opportunity to reach its full potential.

BELINDA: Walmart supports CHCI because we want to empower Latino youth to become civically engaged.  Their programs provide young Hispanic Americans the opportunity to be exposed to the public policy process through robust educational and leadership development programs--allowing for a unique and unmatched experience.

Why is it important for Walmart to support the Latino community and CHCI's programs?

IVAN: The Latino community is the future of this nation and Walmart supports programs that provide opportunities for talented minorities to pursue their dreams and gain access to highly underrepresented areas of our workforce.

BELINDA: The Latino community is an integral part of our society and they impact the direction of our country now and in the future. Supporting the development of young leaders will be key for the Latino community and will provide representation equal to its populations in all sectors of society.

Describe the impact CHCI is making from your perspective and why is that important to Walmart?

IVAN: CHCI is developing the future leaders of the Latino community and that is important to our company, our employees, and our suppliers. We understand that educated, upwardly mobile Latinos are not only good for business, but critical to the future success of America.

BELINDA:  Many Hispanic leaders today launched their public service and professional careers because of CHCI's award-winning programs. The organization has established a result driven and educationally rewarding curriculum , which is very attractive to Walmart.  They are also a proven leader in this field and their success in developing future leaders is something Walmart would like to ensure for many years to come.  This is why Walmart will continue to invest in and support CHCI's programs as their Alumni are making great strides across all industries and sectors benefiting the Latino community.
