Ascend to New Heights

"Celebrating History, Heritage and the American Dream"

CHCI wrapped up its 2010 Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) Events on Wednesday September, 15, when more than 3,000 friends and supporters of the organization attended the 33rd Annual Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., setting a new record for attendance and surpassing previous totals by more than 700 people.

The 2010 CHCI Public Policy Conference, held September 12-14, also set new attendance records while featuring First Lady Michelle Obama, six U.S. cabinet secretaries, more than 20 Members of Congress, and dozens of national experts on the issues most important to Latinos.

At the Gala, more than 50 Members of Congress, cabinet secretaries, and leaders from all over the nation and abroad heard from President Barack Obama, joined onstage by the First Lady, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, CHCI Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez, and CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera. Toyota's President & Chief Operating Officer Yoshimi Inaba provided remarks for the host sponsor.

CHCI's award-winning leadership development programs were on full display as the new class of fellows and interns took the stage.  Thirty-seven students and young professionals, the largest incoming class of program participants ever, provided the backdrop to what CHCI's HHM events are all about, raising funds to support the next generation of Latino leaders.

Actress and community activist Eva Longoria Parker, joined by husband Tony Parker, and jazz legend Arturo Sandoval, received CHCI Medallion of Excellence Awards, while Broadway composer Lin-Manuel Miranda was presented with the CHCI Chair's Award.  CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien was the celebrity host.

Once the awards were handed out, the focus turned to entertainment as legendary percussionist Sheila E. and the E Family Band hit the stage.  Arturo Sandoval joined in for a song, much to the crowd's delight.  Merengue sensation Elvis Crespo jumpstarted the Afterparty, joined by Sheila E. for several songs.
