During the event, hosted by TOYOTA, he shared the many accomplishments of 2011, and then called on each attendee to unite and support CHCI’s mission and 2012 theme—CHCI at 35: Keeping the Founder’s Promise—by funding CHCI's transformative programs that empower young Latinos and develop the next generation of Latino leaders. |CHCI's New York Education Forum Convenes Change Makers|
On January 30, CHCI hosted its first education policy forum of 2012 at NBCUniversal in New York City. The event—Keeping the Promise: Partnerships for Latino Education Success—brought together more than 150 stakeholders, who included educators, students, elected officials, municipal personnel, corporate and nonprofit leaders, celebrities, and media. The event was in partnership with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Excelencia in Education, and NALEO, with the “Continuing the Conversation” reception hosted by Comcast/NBCUniversal/Telemundo. As we celebrate “CHCI at 35: Keeping the Founders’ Promise” this year, we will focus on our 35 years of impact to demonstrate how CHCI continues to fulfill our founders’ vision and CHCI’s mission to develop the next generation of Latino leaders®. And what better way to start the celebration than with a new video series that highlights Latino leadership. The inaugural episode of our Inside the Leader Studio features CHCI Chair Rep. Charles A. |CHCI Congressional Internship Program Brings Diversity to Capitol Hill|
On February 6, CHCI welcomed the arrival of its 2012 Spring Congressional Internship class to Washington, D.C. to take part in the nationally-recognized and award-winning CHCI Congressional Internship Program (CIP). Thanks to Walmart’s generous renewal of its support and the continued commitment of Southwest Airlines, CHCI is able to offer three internship sessions per year that provides Latino college students unmatched job opportunities in congressional offices on Capitol Hill as well as an opportunity to participate in CHCI’s acclaimed leadership and professional training program. |CHCI-Verizon Foundation Domestic Violence Awareness Event|
Domestic violence affects women, children, and men in every community—large, small, urban, rural—yet it continues to be the most underreported crime in America. In light of the proposed reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, CHCI and its valued partner, Verizon Foundation, will host two special events on February 17, focused on reducing domestic violence in America. The 2012 CHCI High School Latino Leaders in D.C. program will take place in Washington, D.C. on July 22-27. Sponsored by State Farm Insurance Companies and held in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the program brings high school students to Washington, D.C. to spend five days learning about how the Federal Government works, meeting important leaders, visiting historic sites, and developing a deeper understanding of how they can affect positive change in their communities and their nation.
