Celebrating a prominent career in healthcare and his unwavering dedication to finding a cure for brain cancer, CHCI Chair Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez has announced his selection for the 2012 Chair’s Award—Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa.

This prestigious award, along with the Medallions of Excellence, will be presented at CHCI’s 35th Anniversary Awards Gala on September 13 in Washington, D.C.

“Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa’s story of sacrifice, dedication, and the success of achieving the American Dream through hard work is a testament to the mission of the CHCI and the entire Latino community,” said Chair Gonzalez. “Great leaders lead by setting an example and Dr. Quinones' life is an inspiration to us all.”

Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa

“Dr. Q” is an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and neuroscientist who leads cutting edge research to cure brain cancer. Named as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in 2008, Dr. Q was also selected by Popular Science magazine as one of its 6th Annual Brilliant Ten—in its search for young genius influencing the course of science. Dr. Q is regularly listed as one of the Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Surgeons as well as Baltimore Top Docs. He has been the recipient of “Health Care Heroes Award,” which recognizes doctors who make a difference in the lives of their patients.

Although Dr. Q comes from humble beginnings, he has achieved amazing things.  He received a medical degree from Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude. He then went on to complete his residency in neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in developmental and stem cell biology.  At Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Dr. Quiñones is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology, Neuroscience and Cellular and Molecular Medicine.  In addition to directing the Brain Tumor Surgery Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, and the Pituitary Surgery Program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Quiñones leads the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Laboratory.  Dr Q has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles and over 40 book chapters and has edited two books on stem cells.  Learn more.

Always a public favorite, Dr. Q has been featured on numerous television shows and specials.  In particular, he was profiled on PBS’ NOVA ScienceNow in 2008.

CHCI’s 35th Anniversary Awards Gala will be the signature event in this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month events that include the Public Policy Conference and Reyes of Comedy. It is the largest and most prestigious gathering of Hispanic bipartisan, public and private sector leaders in the nation.  The evening’s festivities include musical entertainment, remarks by figures of national prominence, and recognition of CHCI's highest honors, while supporting CHCI’s critical educational attainment and leadership development programs.
