More than 150 Los Angeles area students and mentors took part in CHCI’s Ready to Lead Los Angeles on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Rio Hondo College. Actors Wilmer Valderrama (the official spokesperson for R2L) and Gina Rodriguez, and former Labor Secretary Hilda Solismade special appearances throughout the day encouraging students to take advantage of the information and connections they would receive during the course of the day. Students also took part in workshops on college planning, financial literacy, and leadership development.

In addition to hearing from Mr. Valderrama, students had the opportunity to hear from sponsors like General Mills, Gilbert Cisneros, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco during the Mentoring Power Hour, which allowed students to connect with college students and professionals to learn about their individual paths to success.

The group was fortunate enough to close out the day with not one but two keynote speakers. Former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis shared her inspiring story of going from the first in her family to go to college to Washington, DC. “My college counselor told me that I wasn’t college material and I should just be a secretary,” said Solis, “and guess what, I do have that title – I was Secretary of Labor for the United States of America.”

Secretary Solis was followed by actress Gina Rodriguez, who shared the importance of getting an education and staying committed to your goals.

Special thanks to our partners and sponsors:
