Sebastien De La Cruz and UTPA Mariachi Aztlán to Perform at CHCI’s 36th Annual Awards Gala

CHCI is honored to have 11 year-old Sebastien De La Cruz – the “golden cowboy” and award-winning University of Texas-Pan American’s (UTPA) Mariachi Aztlán perform during this year’s 36th Annual Awards Gala, on October 2 in Washington, D.C. Young Sebastien first captivated our hearts in 2012 with his appearance on the highly televised show "America's Got Talent", then again when he made national headlines after singing the National Anthem at games three and four of the NBA Finals. This year, he will be singing the U.S. National Anthem to our Gala guests. Following the anthem, audiences will be treated to the sonorous melodies of award-winning UTPA Mariachi Aztlán. Since 1989, the UTPA mariachi program has promoted Mexican folk music and culture. Its growing reputation as one of the country’s top non-professional groups granted them the opportunity to perform for President Barack Obama in 2010.

The evening’s festivities will include the presentation of the CHCI Medallion of Excellence awards to actor, director, and producer Salma Hayek Pinault, and Dr. Juan Andrade, Jr., president of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. The CHCI Chair's Medallion Award will be presented to Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, Chancellor of the University of Texas System. To top it all off, Emmy Award winning Telemundo journalist, Jose Díaz-Balart, will serve as celebrity host for the gala awards ceremony.
